The smell and sights of Edinburgh

During the last few days  we've had a chance to travel across the city and see some of the sights and smell some of the smells.  It is an old city steeped in what is some generally interesting history. It has an abundance of castles, pubs, hills, and stairs. However, John and I constantly find ourselves asking why in gods name would settlers choose the most steep, hilly, ravine filled area to build a city in.

For this reason the geography of Edinburgh has caused a peculiar building practise to take hold in the city. It is the famed and complex building puzzle. Stores are quite literally constructed on top of one another and each store is only accessible from a street that is further up the near constant incline of the streets. Although odd, it makes for a truly unique sight as your eyes are drawn 50 feet in the air to a bright neon sign advertising a store that is built atop the one standing in front of you.

Another unique experience in Edinburgh is the ever present aroma that fills the streets. John finds the smell unsettling at best, I however find some strange comfort in the smell which can best be described as a mixture of street meat and beer. It is unusual, yes, but I think it adds to the city's ever present...magic? I know there is a better word but magic seems a simple way of describing it.
If you've managed to get through this post congratulations, it is long and rambling.
Steady as she goes,
Stuart from Canada

Steady As She Goes Is Still Better Than Pocketfullness... But Not Much Better.

I Like Steet Cled.

"CAPPRY" Is My Faux-Word. As In "CAPPED While Prying Your Casino From Slum City". I'm Reaching Here.

The page wants me to choose an identity... I'm not sure about this... what are you trying to pull here. So your in the land of the celtics; do they cheer for rangers or celtics in the 'burhg? Well I'll try not to get you killed but I would appretiate it if you walked into a prodestand neighbourhood with a celtics jersy on and filemd it: would make for a good entry.

Anyway as promised I'm posting something on your site! I just saw the bit about using html and thought for the sake of using html i should, and then i should go on to not capolise my i's and make a run on sentance

Steady as she goes is alright... I dunno which is my favourite, I might have to disagree and say that pocketfullness is a little better if only for the sake of insidedness.

Well i hope all is well over on the island.

Bye for now

-just guess who it is... I feel like it won't be hard

Perceptive comments, Stuart. I well remember the smells. They were more pronounced when we lived in New Town in 2002 than they'd been in the 1960s in Morningside. Sounds to me like you are starting to fall under Edinburgh's spell. Just wait till spring comes. And David's right about why Edinburgh is where it is: for defence!
